Founded by Nigerian designer Florentina Agu, Hertunba is a sustainable fashion brand dedicated to crafting timeless, culturally significant pieces for the modern African woman.
Each of the brand’s collections so far have been rooted in this philosophy, and their latest offering “Akaoru” is no different. “Akaoru” reimagines the craftwork of artisans in various disciplines, from weaving, beading and dyeing to carving, painting and tailoring. Each piece is infused with the industrious spirit of artisans who shaped our history through their designs, rendering the elements of their craft into wearable art. The collection features over a dozen ensembles, each striking and thoughtfully fashioned. Below are some of our favorite pieces.
Ewa Necklace Top
The Ewa necklace top is an indulgent take on beading. Constructed almost entirely of jewelry in different shapes and sizes, the Ewa top is held together by breathable fabric and a layered, hand-beaded neckline. Fun and flirty, the Ewa necklace top is a dream come true for girls who loved to make beaded ornaments growing up.

Mowa Asoke Dress
The Mowa Asoke dress comes in a number of striped prints, playing around with colors and patterns. It puts a modern spin on the classic aso oke skirt and blouse, pairing a strapless bodice with a sculpted skirt. The most distinctive feature here is the difference in the prints from top to bottom, creating a flattering contrast between the skirt and bodice.

Nola Dress
Alternatively designed as a top, the Nola dress is an artist’s canvas in motion. The print is composed of palm trees, birds, small houses and mesmerizing river lines, a playful yet elegant take on African story illustrations. It is home stitched into a dress, the mundane translated into high art.

Dada Akwette Jacket
The Dada Akwette Jacket is made from Akwete cloth, a handwoven textile from Igboland. It is cropped and stately, featuring distinct geometric patterns and a subtle band collar. Polished and clean-cut, the jacket is definitely a statement piece, able to be worn both casually and formally.

Igi Bag
Perhaps the most striking piece in this collection, the Igi bag is a hand-carved item made from upcycled treated mahogany and two-toned ebony. It features elaborate Nsibidi markings which elevate the bag’s minimalistic design and pay homage to the ancient art of wood carving. It is a truly stunning piece, balancing craft and functionality with incredible precision.

Nini Set With Cape
The Nini set is a casual yet intentional piece. Made from hand-dyed material, it features a maxi skirt with a handwoven fringe and a fluid cape top with a halter neck. This set embodies a very sensual elegance, accentuating the body without being too form-fitting.
